.Week of 11/9 - 11/13
Fifth grade math students presented their coordinate grid song/dance at last week's whole school meeting and did an excellent job! I'm hoping to post a link to the video tomorrow for those of you who were unable to make it. We are scheduled to present again on 12/11. I will send a reminder email as it gets closer. Students will be beginning the portfolio process in the next couple of weeks. We will spend about a week choosing artifacts from first trimester in all subject areas, as well as their personal goals. Portfolio artifacts should demonstrate new knowledge, skill and/or growth in a given area. Students spend a significant amount of time describing and reflecting on the pieces they choose. This can be a difficult but very worthwhile and important process. The ability to reflect on one's own work is where students solidify their understanding the most. At the end of the first trimester students will invite parents in for a learning celebration to view and discuss their portfolios. At that time they will share/bring home the rest of the work from the trimester that didn't make the portfolio cut. More to come on this. It's a short week month and we've got a lot going on in the classroom right now. We've been doing a lot of writing every day with our focus on the ideas trait. Student are working on revisions and peer-editing with a couple of their writing pieces and have been tasked with typing and sharing multiple vocabulary and reading response assignments each week. A reminder to ask your child to see his/her planner on Monday nights (at a minimum), as I have been signing off on each planner Monday mornings indicating assignments have been written for the week. Please help your child at home by asking to see their planner and their work. This helps you stay connected with what's going on in the classroom as well. Feel free to contact me with any questions. |
